Maximizing your Linkedin.com Account and Marketing “You”

Ever wondered how to get the most out of your Linkedin.com account? Here are some tips to help you build a great Profile:

  • What does your Profile say about you? Does it give the reader information about how to contact you? Is your email address in your Summary? How about your phone number? If it doesn’t – put it on there! It is critical for the most updated information be in the Summary part of your Profile, as this is what people will see about you. In old newspaper terms, it is called “above the fold” and it is what potential candidates and clients see first about you and if they aren’t impressed, forget them looking any further about any of your achievements. Furthermore, does your Summary tell potential Candidates / Clients “this summary has been slapped together quickly” or does it portray a Professional who really wants to connect with you?
  • First Impression – make your Summary ALL ABOUT YOU AND THE CURRENT PROJECTS YOU ARE WORKING ON.
  • Make sure and include some of your latest achievements and jobs orders you are currently working on. When adding the jobs to your Summary, just make it a 2-line informational statement so it is easy to update.
  • Add your contact information, whether it is your email address or phone number or both. The intention is to make it easy to connect with you.
  • When building your Profile, take the time to send out “Requests for Recommendations” to your past and current peers, supervisors and clients. Nothing says “this is someone I need to connect with” more than a personal recommendation.
  • Remember, building a powerful Profile about “You” is a process, continue to review it with a critical eye and update, update, update!

Invite Everyone!

  • Send out invitations to all your candidates. It may take some time, but it can really pay off. Here are some tips to help you “show class, have pride and display character” in your invitations. Remember, you want to differentiate yourself from the pack, so make your invitation a little more personal. Following is how to edit your Invitation:
  • Go into your LinkedIn.com Inbox and go to the “Compose Message” dropdown box. Click on the “Send Invitation” box and input Names and emails in the format requested.
  • Make sure and “Edit / Preview Invitation Text” button and this is where I copy and paste a nicer invitation into here, along with my full title and contact information. I save this in a file of “Templates” so it is easier to manage.
Here is the email invitation I use to send out:
I'd like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn. LinkedIn.com
is a great way to network, so feel free to use it to its fullest potential and
invite your contacts as well. It has definitely been a great tool for
me! I look forward to working with you, and please call if you have
questions.
